In 1868, the parish of Clooney B contained the following places:

"CLOONEY, (or Cloney, or Clonie), a parish in the barony of Upper Bunratty, in the county of Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles to the N. of Quin. The surface has much bog and hilly ground; the affable portions consist of soil of a medium quality. Lead-ore exists at Ballyliskey. The parish contains the village of Spancelhill, and is intersected by the road from Ennis to Killaloe. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Killaloe, value with Quin, the post town, £279, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Quin and Dowrie. There are two hedge schools. Clooney House, standing near the old castle, is a handsome mansion; other scats are Castleview, Toonagh, Danganville, Wellpark, Corbally, Classagh, and some others. The old church and castle are in ruins.

"SPANCEL HILL, a village in the parish of Clooney, barony of Upper Bunratty, county Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 3¾ miles N.N.E. of Ennis, on the road from Quin to Gort. It is famous for its horse fairs, which are held on 24th June and 20th August in each year."
