KILMURRY I

In 1868, the parish of Kilmurry I contained the following places:

"KILMURRY, a parish in the barony of Ibrickan, county Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles S. of Milltown-Malbay. Ennistimon is its post town. The parish, which is 8 miles long by 4 broad, includes several small islands and part of Lough Doo. The surface extends along the shore of the ocean, and is wildly mountainous, rising to the height of 1,282 feet at Slieve-Callan. The headlands of Lurga and Caherrush occur on the rocky coast. There is a coastguard station. The living is an impropriate rectory in the diocese of Killaloe. There is a Roman Catholic chapel united to that of Kilfarboy, also seven day schools. The fishery employs most of the inhabitants of the coast. Fairs are held on the 17th May and 25th August."

"ENNISKERRY, islands in the parish of Kilmurry, barony of Ibrickan, county Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 2 miles N.N.W. of Dunbeg Bay. Mutton Island, the largest of the group, has an area of 201 acres."

"MULLAGH, a village in the parish of Kilmurry, barony of Ibrickan, county Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles S. of Milltown-Malbay. Here is a Roman Catholic chapel. Fairs are held on the 1st January, St. Patrick's Day, Easter Monday, and Whit-Monday."
