In 1868, the parish of Kilchreest contained the following places:

"KILCHREEST, (and Islands) a parish in the barony of Clonderalaw, county Clare, province Munster, Ireland, 2 miles N. of Killadyser, containing the village of Ballynacally. Kildysart is its post town. It is 5 miles long by 2 broad, and lies at the confluence of the rivers Fergus and Shannon. The surface consists of soils of various quality. The road from Kildysart to Ennis traverses the interior. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Killaloe, value with Kildysart, £461. There are a Roman Catholic chapel; also four day schools. Paradise and Fort Fergus are the principal residences. There are ruins of Dangan Castle and of an ancient church. Innismoor is the principal island [which see]."

"BALLYNACLLY, a village in the parish of Kilchreest, and barony of Clonderalaw, in the county of Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 9 miles to the S.W. of Ennis. Agricultural produce is sent to Limerick, and stone and sea-weed imported, by the river Fergus, which runs near the village, and is navigable for small vessels. Cattle fairs are held on the 14th June, the 16th September, and the 8th November. B-ALLYNACARRIGA, a village in the barony of Bear, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 10 miles to the S.W. of Castletown."
