The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Aghadown contained the following places:

"AGHADOWN, (or AUGHADOWN), a parish in the eastern division of the barony of Carbery West, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles to the S.W. of Skibbereen. It is situated on the river Ilen, which is navigable, and communicates with Baltimore harbour, near Cape Clear. It includes the islands of East and West Calf, East and Zest Innisbeg, Hare, and Scheams. About one-third of the land is rock and bog, the rest is cultivated, and the soil by the river is very fertile. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross, value 1272, in the patronage of the bishop There are ruins of a castle erected in 1495, and of an abbey called the Abbey of Our Lady. Aghadown House stands on high ground, and is surrounded by fine woods. Fairs are held on the 6th May and the 7th October for the sale of cattle, sheep, &c.
