The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballymoney contained the following places:

"BALLYMONEY, a parish in the barony of East Carbery, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 9 miles to the W. of Bandon. It is situated on both banks of the river Bandon, and contains the village of Ballyneen. It comprises a large tract of mountain and bog. The population are chiefly engaged in agriculture. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross, of the value of £695, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholics and Wesleyans have chapels in the parish. At Ballincarrig are the ruins of a castle, erected probably about 1585, with a tower of much earlier date."

"BALLYNEEN, a village in the parish of Ballymoney, and barony of East Carbery, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, near Iniskeen. It is situated on the river Bandon, which is crossed by a bridge of ten arches. A police force is stationed here, and petty sessions are held. The village has a dispensary and a Wesleyan chapel."
