The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Coole contained the following places:

"COOLE, a parish in the barony of Barrymore, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles to the S.E. of Fermoy. Cloyne is its post town. This parish lies at the foot of the Nagles mountains. The surface consists of good land. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Cloyne, value £112, in the patronage of the bishop. Divine service is performed at a private house, and the Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Castle-Lyons. Here are ruins of Desmond's Castle, and remains of an abbey founded by the Barry family in 1296, but subsequently transferred to the Knights Templars. On the site of the latter stands the modern residence named Coole Abbey."
