The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Cullen contained the following places:

"CULLEN, a parish in the barony of Duhallow, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles N. W. of Millstreet. Kanturk is its nearest post town. It is situated on the river Blackwater, and the surface is boggy. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe, value with Drumtariffe, £580, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is at Drumtariffe, but the Roman Catholic chapel is at Cullen. In the Roman Catholic arrangement the parish is united to Drumtariffe and Millstreet. There are four hedge-schools. In the vicinity are the ruins of an old castle, built by the O'Kiefs, of a nunnery, and of the ancient church. Near Keale have been found relics indicative of a battle having been fought here."
