The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilmoe contained the following places:

"KILMOE, a parish in the barony of West Carbery, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 8 miles S.W. of Skull. Skibbereen is its post town. The parish is 7 miles long by 3 broad, and contains the village of Crookhaven. The surface extends along the coast between Crookhaven Harbour and Dunmanus Bay. It consists of a mountainous peninsula, a few small outlying islands, and the headlands of Mizen Head, Three-castle Point, and Brow Head. Copper is met with in parts. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Cork, value £383, in the patronage of the crown and bishop, alternately. The present church was recently rebuilt, but the old one was erected in the beginning of last century by Bishop Brown. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Skull. There are three Sunday besides several day schools. Rockview is the principal residence."

"ROCK-ISLAND, a post-office village in the parish of Kilmoe, barony of West Carbery, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 19 miles S.W. of Skibbereen. It is situated on a rocky peninsula near Crookhaven, and on the new road from Skibbereen. It contains a coastguard station and a dispensary. See also Crookhaven."

"SPANISH COVE, a small bay in the parish of Kilmoe, county Cork, Ireland, between Crookhaven and Barley Cove, on the S.E. of Mizen Head."
