The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilnamanagh contained the following places:

"KILNAMANAGH, a parish in the barony of Bear, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles S.W. of Castletown-Bearhaven, its post town. It is 6 miles long by 3 broad, and contains the villages of Allihies, Ballydonegan, Ballynacallagh, Ballynacarriga, Cloanmines, Firkeel, Kilkinnikin, Killough, and Kilmichael, and the island of Dursey. The surface consists of part of the peninsula lying between Bantry Bay and the estuary of the Kenmare. The coast is rocky, the Crow Head, Garrinish Point, and Blackball Head, being the principal prominences. The bays are Ballydonagan and Kilkinny. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ross, value with Bearhaven, £385, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Bear-Island and Castletown. There are five day schools. The copper mines of Allihies are in the vicinity, and slate and iron are also met with."

"ALLIHIES, (or Bearhaven), a village in the barony of Bear, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles W. of Castletown Bearhaven. It is situated on the bay of Ballydonagan, and has one of the richest and most productive copper mines in the country. Six thousand tons have been obtained is one year, anal 1,200 hands have been employed in working it.

"BALLYNACALAGH, a village in the parish of Kilnamanagh, and barony of Bear, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 12 miles to the S.W. of Castletown."

"CAHERMORE, a hamlet in the parish of Kilnamanagh, barony of Bear, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 5 miles to the S.W. of Castletown-Bearhaven. It is on the coast of Bantry Bay."

"CLOANMINES, a village in the barony of Bear, county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 5 miles S.W. of Castletown."

"DURSEY, an island in the parish of Kilnamanagh, barony of Bere, in the county of Cork, province of Munster, Ireland. It lies between the bays of Kenmare and Bantry, 10 miles W. of Castletown, and belongs to the Earl of Bantry. It was used as a stronghold during the Rebellion, but was reduced by Captain Rostock. A party of French landed herein 1790. Near the island are the rocks called the Bull, Cow, and Calf."

"FIRKEEL, a village in the barony of Bear, county Cork, Ireland, 10 miles S.W. of Bearhaven."

"KILKINNIKIN, a village in the parish of Kilnamanagh, barony of Bear, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles S.W. of Castletown-Bearhaven."

"KILLOUGH, a village in the parish of Kilnamanagh, in the barony of Bear, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 7 miles S.W. of Castletown Bearhaven."

"KILMICHAEL, a village in the parish of Kilnamanagh and barony of Bear, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 12 miles W.S.W. of Castletown-Bearhaven."
