In 1868, the parish of Witter contained the following places:

"WITTER, a parish in the barony of Ards, county Down, Ireland, 2.'z miles S.E. of Portaferry. The village is situated on the E. side of the entrance to Lough Strangford. On the eastern coast are Quintin, Millin, and Tara bays, and on the western that of Bar Hall, with the headland of Ballygrintin to the S. There are some remains of De Courcy's castle. The land is hilly, and generally fertile. The living is a vicarage united to that of Inch."

"QUINTIN, a hamlet in the parish of Witter, barony of Ards, county Down, province of Ulster, Ireland, 2 miles E. of Portaferry. It stands at the eastern mouth of Lough Strangford, on the bay of Quintin. Near the village are ruins of Quintin castle."
