The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868
In 1868, the parish of Danesfort contained the following places:"DANESFORT, (or Dunfert), a parish in the barony of Shillelogher, in the county of Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles S. of Kilkenny. Bennet's Bridge is its post town. It is situated on the W. side of the valley of the Nore. The soil is good, on a substratum of limestone. The road from Killkenny to Knocktopher traverses the interior. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ossory, value with Burnchurch, £700, in the patronage of the crown. There are Roman Catholic chapels here and at Bennet's Bridge, which are united to those of Grange, Kells, and Ladyswell. There is a National school at Bennet's Bridge, besides two other day schools. Danesfort House is the principal residence. An ancient castle formerly stood here, and there are some remains of Danish fortifications.
