The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilree contained the following places:

"KILREE, a parish in the barony of Kells, county Kilkenny, province of Leinster, Ireland, 2 miles N.W. of Knocktopher, its post town. It is 2 miles in length and the same in breadth. The parish is crossed by the road from Dublin to Carrick-on-Suir. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ossory, value with Kells, £551, in the patronage of the bishop and Marquis of Ormonde alternately. Kilree House and Chapel Izod House are the principal residences. Here is a very fine specimen of an ancient round tower, near which are some monastic ruins containing a monument to one of the Danganmores. These ruins mark the site of an abbey founded in 1176 by Geof. de Marisco, and dedicated to St. Gobban. Another object of interest is a curious stone cross, alleged to have been erected in memory of Neill Callan, King of Ireland, who was drowned in the Awnree, or King's river.
