The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ardagh contained the following places:

"ARDAGH, a parish partly in the barony of Shanid, partly in that of Glenquin, in the county of Limerick, province of Munster, Ireland, 3 miles to the N.W. of Newcastle. The district is pleasant and fertile, partly planted. Coal is found in the mountains on the west, with good ironstone and fireclay. The living is a rectory forming part of the union of St. Michael, in the diocese of Limerick, Ardfert, and Aghadoe. The church was destroyed in 1641, and its ruins stand near the village. The principal seats are Ardagh Lodge, and Ballynaborney. Fairs are held on the 11th May, the 14th August, and the 21st November."
