The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Collon contained the following places:

"COLLON, a parish and post village in the baronies of Ferrard and Upper Slane, in the counties of Louth and Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles S. of Ardee, and 38 from Dublin. The surface is hilly, the highest ground at Bellpatrick rising 789 feet above the level of the sea. Tributaries to the Boyne flow through the parish. About 5,000 acres of waste land were reclaimed by Anthony Foster, father of the late Lord Oriel, and were converted into prolific plantations. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Armagh, value with Mosstown and Dromin, £374, in the patronage of the primate. The town is situated on a confluent of the river Boyne, which is here crossed by a stone bridge. It has a remarkably neat appearance, and has recently been much improved. It contains a Roman Catholic chapel, Methodist meeting-house, several schools, police station, and a dispensary. The greater number of the inhabitants are labourers. The church, which stands in the town, was built in 1813 by private subscription and by aid from the late Board of First Fruits. It contains the family tomb of the Fosters. Oriel Temple is the seat of Viscount Ferrard."
