The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Philipstown contained the following places:

"PHILIPSTOWN, a parish in the barony of Ardee, county Louth, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles S.W. of Louth. Ardee is its post town. This parish is 3 miles long, and its greatest breadth is 1½ mile. The surface, which lies along the bank of the river Glyde, consists of a good soil. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Armagh, value with Charlestown, £365, in the patronage of the primate. Here are a Roman Catholic chapel, and three or four daily schools. Thomastown and Rathneeston House are the principal residences."
