The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Aghagower contained the following places:

"AGHAGOWER, (or Aughagower), a parish in the baronies of Burrishoole and Murrisk, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 4 miles S.E. of Westport. The parish, which extends over an area of 55,048 acres, consists almost entirely of mountain and bog, not more than a tenth part of the land being under cultivation, and the methods of farming are rude. The living is a vicarage, united with Westport, or Oughaval, in the diocese of Tuam, Killala, and Achonry. The church is modern, and has a square tower. A few persons are employed in the linen manufacture. Around tower, and the ruins of Doone Castle, constitute the antiquities of the parish. A monastery was founded here by St. Patrick.
