AGHAMORE

In 1868, the parish of Aghamore contained the following places:

"AGHAMORE, (or Aghavower), a parish in the barony of Costello, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 4 miles N. of Ballyhaunis. A monastery was established here, it is said, by St. Patrick. The parish contains several lakes, and a large tract of bog. The rest is principally under cultivation. Black marble is quarried here. The living is a rectory joined to that of Killultalgh, in the diocese of Tuam, Killala, and Achonry. The ruins of the old church still exist. Fairs are held on the 3rd June, the 8th August, the 19th October, and the 18th December.

"BALLYHAUNIS, a small market town in the parish of Aghamore, and barony of Costello, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 22 miles to the S.E. of Castlebar. An Augustine monastery formerly existed here, of which there are some remains. A police force is stationed here. The market is held on Tuesday. Fairs for the sale of cattle are held on the 1st June, the 2nd July, the 22nd September, and the 29th October."
