The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Balla contained the following places:

"BALLA, (or Ballagh), a parish and market town in the barony of Clanmaurice, in the county of Mayo, and province of Connaught, Ireland, 8 miles to the S.E. of Castlebar. It is situated in a fertile district, watered by a small stream which rises near the town. Good limestone is quarried in the parish. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Tuam, Killala, and Achonry, of the value, with several others, of £379, in the patronage of the bishop. There are remains of a small church apparently of great antiquity, and near it is part of a round tower still 50 feet in height. A monastery is said to have been founded here in the 7th century. Two chapels erected over the stream are much frequented on special occasions. Petty sessions are held weekly, and a police force is stationed in the town. There are several pleasant seats in the parish. Tuesday is the market day. Fairs are held on the 11th June, the 12th August, the 26th September, and the 15th October, for the sale of cattle and sheep.
