EMATRIS

In 1868, the parish of Ematris contained the following places:

"EMATRIS, a parish in the barony of Dartree, county Monaghan, province of Ulster, Ireland, 4 miles W. of Ballybay, containing Rockcorry, its post town. On the W. border flows the Cootehill river, and the Cootehill lake lies on the S. The road from Cootehill to Monaghan passes through the parish. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Clogher, value £299, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was built by Richard Dawson in 1729, and is situated at Dawson Grove. There are Roman Catholic chapels at Carrowaugh and Edrigole, also Presbyterian and Wesleyan meeting-houses, four Sunday and eleven day schools, two assisted by the National Board, and three by the London Hibernian Society. Prominent among numerous seats is Dawson Grove, the residence of Lord Cremorne, surrounded by a well-wooded park. A large rath is seen at Freame Mount."

"DAWSON GROVE, a demesne in the parish of Ematris, barony of Dartry, in the county of Monaghan, province of Ulster, Ireland. It is the property of Viscount Cremorne, and is situated on the Cootehill lakes, contiguous to the demesnes of Bellamont Forest, Dromore Park, and Freamemount. Within the grounds of this demesne is a mausoleum to Lady Jane Dawson."

"ROCKCORRY, a market town in the parish of Ematris, barony of Dartree, county Monaghan, province of Ulster, Ireland, 4 miles N.E. of Cootehill. It is situated on the road from Cootehill to Monaghan. It consists chiefly of one well-built street, containing a market house, police station, and meeting-houses for Presbyterians and Wesleyans. There are a dispensary and a school. Wednesday is market day. Fairs are held on the last Wednesday in every month."
