The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Croghan contained the following places:

"CROGHAN, a parish in the barony of Lower Philipstown, in King's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 4 miles on the road from Philipstown to Edenderry, its post town, and thence to Tyrrel's Pass. The surface is flat and boggy. The Grand canal passes near the southern boundary. Croghan Hill, immortalised by Spenser in the "Faerie Queen," being the only rising ground in the locality, forms a striking feature; it is entirely cultivated, and from its summit an extensive view may be obtained of the surrounding country. At the foot of the hill stand the ruins of a church and the cottage of Earl Charlville, the owner of the estate; and near its summit are some monumental remains of interest. The living is a suspended rectory in the diocese of Kildare, in the patronage of the bishop. This parish has no church, but here is a Roman Catholic chapel, and a day school supported by local contributions."
