The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Shinrone contained the following places:

"SHINRONE, a parish, post and market village in the barony of Clonlisk, King's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 26 miles S.W. of Tullamore, and 81 from Dublin. The soil is mostly good, with a small proportion of bog. The village is situated near the river Shannon, and contains a police station, a dispensary, and fever hospital. Petty sessions are held once a week. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Killaloe, value with two others £487, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was built in 1819 by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. There is a Roman Catholic chapel, united to that of Kilmurry-Ely, also two Wesleyan meeting-houses. There are four public and three private day schools. Cangort Park, the principal seat, occupies the site of the castle, which was destroyed in 1641. Fairs are held 9th July and 21st November."

"BROSNA, a village in the parish of Shinrone, and barony of Clonlisk, King's County, in the province of Leinster, Ireland, 4 miles to the N.W. of Roscrea. It is seated at the foot of the Slievebloom Mountains, on the Little Brosna river, a feeder of the Shannon, into which it falls below Bannagher. There is a police station in the village."
