The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Cloontuskert contained the following places:

"CLOONTUSKERT, (or Cloontwiscar), a parish in the barony of Ballintober South, in the county of Roscommon, province of Connaught, Ireland, 7 miles to the N.E. of Roscommon. The parish, which is partly bordered by the river Shannon and Lough Ree, consists of a large proportion of bog, with a poor soil. It is traversed by the great road between Lanesborough and Roscommon, and contains the villages of Clontuskert and Ballyleague. The living is a suspended vicarage in the diocese of Elphin, united to Clonfinlough. There are three hedge schools. According to Archdall a monastery was founded here by St. Faithlec, which passed into the hands of the O'Farralls, and entirely disappeared after the Dissolution.
