The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Shancough contained the following places:

"SHANCOUGH, a parish in the barony of Tiraghrill, county Sligo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 6 miles S.E. of Collooney, its post town. The surface comprises a large proportion of mountain and bog, and is crossed by the road from Sligo to Ballyfarnon. Lough Arrow is in this parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Elphin, value with Kilmactreney, £79, in the patronage of the bishop. It is joined with Kilmactreney in the Roman Catholic arrangement. Limestone and iron ore exist."
