The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Aghnameadle contained the following places:

"AGHNAMEADLE, (or Aghnamadle), a parish in the barony of Upper Ormond, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 3 miles to the S. of Monygall. It contains the town of Toomyvara, and is situated at the foot of the Devil's Bit hills. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh, value £319, in the patronage of the bishop. Here are the ruins of Aghnamadle Court, the old seat of the O'Egans, the remains of Blane Castle, and the ancient church.

"TOOMYVARA, a post-office village in the parish of Aghnameadle, barony of Upper Ormond, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 27 miles N. of Cashel, and 88 from Dublin. It is situated on the road from Dublin to Limerick, and contains a police station and dispensary. There are a Roman Catholic chapel and a public school. In this parish are the ruins of a preceptory of Knights Templars, and the remains of Knockane and Blane castles. Fairs are held on 5th June, 23rd July, 29th September, and 3rd November."
