The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballingarry contained the following places:

"BALLINGARRY, a parish in the barony of Slieveardagh, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 15 miles to the E. of Cashel. The parish comprises a large part of the great coalfield of Slieveardagh, and the coalworks furnish employment to most of the inhabitants. There are remains of several old forts. Here, too, is the cottage and garden of the widow M'Cormick, memorable as the scene of the meeting of the police and the party of Smith O'Brien, and the rout of the latter, in July, 1848. The living is a vicarage, of the value of £182, in the diocese of Cashel, Emly, Waterford, and Lismore, and in the patronage of the bishop. Fairs are held here on Whit Monday, the 23rd July, the 11th November, and the 12th December.
