The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Barnane Ely contained the following places:

"BARNANE-ELY, a parish in the barony of Skerrin, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 3 miles to the W. of Templemore. The district is chiefly mountain and waste. Here is the lofty range called the Devil's Bit Mountains, rising to the height of 1,500 or 2,000 feet, and commanding fine views. An ancient manuscript of the Gospels in the Irish language was discovered in a cave here in 1790. The living is a rectory united with that of Kilfithmone, in the diocese of Cashel, Emly, Waterford, and Lismore."
