The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Borrisokane contained the following places:

"BORRISOKANE, a parish in the barony of Lower Ormond, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 16 miles to the W. of Roscrea, and 90 miles from Dublin. It is situated in a boggy district, eastward of Lough Derg, and contains the village of Goatstown. Good limestone is quarried here. There is a police station, and petty sessions are held weekly. The town also contains a small prison, a dispensary, and a fever hospital. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh, of the value of £122, in the patronage of the bishop. There is a spacious Roman Catholic chapel, and several parochial and other schools. The principal mansions are Kyle House, Arran Hill (belonging to the Marquis of Ormonde), Bushey Park, &c. Fairs take place, in April, June, September, and December.
