The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Castletownarra contained the following places:

"CASTLETOWNARRA, a parish in the barony of Owney and Arra, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 10 miles to the W. of Nenagh. It is situated in a mountainous country on Lough Derg, and contains large slate-quarries at Garry Kennedy. The greater part of the surface is cultivated, and the scenery of the neighbourhood is very striking and beautiful. The highest ground is about 1,550 feet above the level of the sea. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh, value with those of Youghal-Arra and Burgess-Beg, £514, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is ancient, and is situated on the shore of Lough Derg. There is a police station. The principal seat is Castle Lough, near which are remains of the old castle from which the parish took its name."

"PORTROE, a post-office village in the parish of Castletownarra, barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 7 miles N.W. of Nenagh. It is situated on the road from Portumna to Killaloe. It contains a police station, a Roman Catholic chapel, and a dispensary, which last is within the Nenagh poor-law union. Fairs are held on 26th February, 22nd March, 14th May, 23rd July, and 11th November."
