The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilvellane contained the following places:

"KILVELLANE, a parish in the barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, containing its post town, Newport Tip. The parish is 6½ miles long, and its greatest breadth is 3 miles. The surface, which is boggy, is drained on the S. by the river Clare. The Mulkern is a stream flowing through the western district. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Cashel, value with Newport, £822, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is near a century old. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Kilnerath and Kilcomenty. There are seven or eight day schools. Barnee is the principal residence. In the vicinity are ruins of Derryleigh Castle, and of an old church. Building stone and copper ore are obtainable.

"NEWPORT-TIP, a small post and market town in the parish of Kilvellane, barony of Owney and Arra, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 27 miles N.W. of Cashel, and 109 from Dublin. It is situated on the river Milkerne, and on the road from Killaloe to Abington, near the Keeper Mountains. It contains a church, Roman Catholic chapel, bridewell, barracks, and a dispensary, which last is within the Nenagh poor-law union. Castlewaller is the seat of the Wallers, who are the proprietors of the town. The Earl of Roden takes title of baron from this place. Fairs are held on 27th April, 29th May, 21st July, and 23rd October."
