The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Modreeny contained the following places:

"MODREENY, a parish in the barony of Lower Ormond, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 9 miles N.E. of Nenagh. It contains its post town, Cloghjordan. The parish is 6 miles long, and its extreme breadth is 3½ miles. The surface consists generally of a good soil, and is traversed by the road from Birr to Nenagh. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Killaloe, value £438, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was built in 1828, by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Ardcrony and Kilmane. There are three Sunday-schools, and five or six daily schools. The principal residences are Modreeny Hall, the seat of Sir T. Dancer, Bart., and Modreeny House. There are ruins of a castle."

"CLOGHJORDAN, a district parish and postal village in the barony of Lower Ormond, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland. The village is about 5 miles on the road from Borrisokane to Dunkerrin, near the frontier of the county, and contains the church, erected in 1827 by gift and loan from the late Board of First Fruits, a hospital, dispensary, and a distillery. There are places of worship for the Baptists and Wesleyans, and a Roman Catholic chapel. The surface of the parish is well cultivated and prolific. The living is a curacy in the diocese of Killaloc, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh, value £76, in the patronage of the Incumbent of Modreeny. In the neighbourhood are Sopwell, a seat of the Trenches; Lettyville, Ballin, Castleshepherd, and Northland. Fairs are held on the 12th May, 12th August, and 1st December."
