The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Shanrahan contained the following places:

"SHANRAHAN, a parish in the barony of West Iffa and Offa, county Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, containing the post town of Clogheen and the village of Burncourt. It lies in a valley between the Galtee and Waterford mountains, and is crossed by the road from Clonmel to Cork. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lismore, value £202, in the patronage of the crown. The church was recently built by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. There is a Roman Catholic chapel. At Burncourt are the ruins of a mansion of the barons of Ikerron, besieged by Cromwell. Quin, the actor, is believed to have been a native of this parish."

"BURNCOURT, a village in the parish of Shanrahan, and barony of West Iffa and Offa, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles to the N-W. of Clogbeen. Here are the remains of an old seat of the barons of Ikerron, which was captured by Cromwell."

"CLOGHEEN, a post and market town in the parish of Shanrahan, in the barony of West Iffa and Offa, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 13 miles to the S.W. of Clonmel, and 119 from Dublin. It is situated on the river Tar, at the cross roads from Dublin to Cork, and from Cahir to Lismore. Rising immediately over the town are the Knockmealdown mountains. Here are a church, Roman Catholic chapel, fever hospital, dispensary, Union poorhouse, bridewell, cavalry and constabulary barracks, flour-mills, and market-house. Petty and general sessions are held here. At the distance of 4 miles near Skiheenarinky, is an interesting stalactite cave. The principal residence is Shanbally Castle, the seat of the Earl of Lismore. Saturday is the market day. Fairs are held on-Whit Monday, 1st August, 28th October, and 12th December."
