"CLONMEL, a parish, an inland town, municipal and parliamentary borough, partly in the county of Waterford, and partly in the South Riding of the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, 103 miles S.W. of Dublin, and 28 miles N.W. of Waterford, by the Waterford and Limerick railway, on which it is a station. It is situated in a beautiful valley on the banks of the river Suir, surrounded by picturesque mountains. The greater portion of the town is on the Tipperary side of the river, and is connected with the Waterford portion by three stone bridges. More and Long Islands are included within the limits of the municipal borough, which, according to the census of 1861, comprised 1,537 houses, inhabited by a population of 11,104, of whom 9,982 were returned as Roman Catholics, 863 Established Church, 78 Presbyterians, 45 Methodists, 85 Society of Friends, and 51 of all other persuasions.
