The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Churchtown contained the following places:

"CHURCHTOWN, a parish in the barony of Ratheonrath, in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland. It is situated between Lough Ennel and the Royal canal, 6 miles on the road from Mullingar to Athlone. In some parts are bog and limestone, but the arable land is prolific. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Meath, value with Dysart and Conragh, £354, in the patronage of the bishop and crown alternately. The church is a modern structure, built at the expense of the Board of First Fruits. There are several schools and two Roman Catholic chapels in the union, one in Conragh, the other in Dysart. The principal residences are Redmonstown House and Balrath. Here are ruins of the castles of Oldtown, Dundonnel, and Fieldtown."
