"KILLUA, a parish in the barony of Delvin, county Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles N.E. of Castletown-Delvin. Athboy is its post town. The parish is 3 miles long and near the same broad. It contains the town of Clonmellon. The surface consists of a tolerably good but light soil. The living is a vic, in the diocese of Meath, value with Killalon, £343, in the patronage of the Marquis of Drogheda and the bishop alternately. There are a church, a Roman Catholic chapel united to that of Killalon, and five or six day schools, within the parish. The principal residences are, Killua Castle, the seat of Sir M. L. Chapman, Bart., and Ballinlough, the mansion of Sir James Nugent. In the vicinity of the former demesne are the remains of a preceptory of the Knights Templars. Limestone abounds."

"CLONMELAN, a post and market town, in the parish of Killua, in the barony of Delvin, in the county of Westmeath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles to the N.E. of Castletowndelvin. It is situated on the road from Athboy to Finnea, and contains the parish church a very neat building. Here is a police station, and petty sessions are held in the town. The dispensary is within the Kells Poor-law Union. The Roman Catholic parish of Clonmelan is in the diocese of Meath. In the vicinity of the town is Killua Castle, the seat of Sir Dl. L. Chapman, Bart.; also the ruins of a castle and church. Tuesday is market day. Fairs are held on the 28th January, 2nd May, 25th July, and 29th September."
