The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballycanew contained the following places:

"BALLYCANEW, a parish in the barony of Gorey, in the county of Wexford, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles to the S. of Gorey. It is in a hilly district, near the river Awin-Banna. A Danish fort once stood here, the remains of which have now disappeared. The living is a rectory united with that of Liskinfere, in the diocese of Ossory, Ferns, and Leighlin. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel in the village. Fairs are held in April, July, September, October, and November.
