In 1868, the parish of Aghowle contained the following places:

"AGHOWLE, (or Aghold, or Agh-uaill), a parish in the barony of Shillelagh, in the county of Wicklow, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles to the N. W. of Carnew. Much of the surface is mountain and bog. Here is a police station, and petty sessions are held once a fortnight. The living is a rectory united with the vicarages of Mullinacuff, Crecrin, and Liscolman, in the diocese of Ossory, Ferns, and Leighlin, value £600, in the patronage of the bishop. There was formerly a monastery in this place, of which there are some ruins. Stone crosses are also to be found here.

"COOLKENNA STREET, a postal village or hamlet in the parish of Aghowle, barony of Shillelagh, in the county of Wicklow, province of Leinster, Ireland, 6 miles W. of Tinahely. Fairs are held on the 1st February, May, August, and November."
