In 1868, the parish of Kilranelagh contained the following places:

"KILRANELAGH, a parish in the barony of Upper Talbotstown, county Wicklow, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles E. of Baltinglass, its post town. The parish is 3 miles long, and in some places nearly as much broad. The surface has much mountain and moor, attaining an altitude of 2,155 feet at Mount Cadeen. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Leighlin, value with Killigan, £316, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Rathvilly and Tinnock. There are four day schools. Fort Granite, Ballinroan, and Kilranelagh are the principal residences of the parish. Granite and stone slate occur among the rocks, and potter's clay is found."
