It was founded in 1691.
Church built in 1688 by James Smith for the congregation ousted from the Abbey Church of Holyrood when James VII converted it into a Chapel for the Knights of the Thistle. In 1691, opened for worship, the congregation having used Lady Yesters Church since 1697. In the churchyard are buried: Robert Fergusson, Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart, George Drummond and Burns -Clarinda- (Mrs MacLehose). (An Edinburgh Alphabet, JF Birrel, Mercat Press, 1980)
