Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk, Edinburgh, Church of Scotland

The church has a graveyard.

It was founded in 1620.

Old church built 1612, opened for worship 1620. Desecrated by Cromwells troops in 1650, who used it as barracks. 1681 Tron Church bell hung in church. 1718 Old Tower, used as gunpowder store blew up. 1721 New church built as a separate church attached to the west end of the old church, each church had a minister presiding over it. 1845 old church burned, and restored by David Bryce in 1857. 1928, old and new churches united, and dividing wall removed in 1938. 1979, linked with Highland church, Tolbooth St Johns. An earlier church existed on much the same site, established by James I around 1440 as a Grey Friar (Franciscan) monastery, this was destroyed during the reformation, in 1559.
