The parish was created by act of the General Assembly in May 1838, with the church opening on July 29th 1838. The first minister was Dr Thomas Chalmers, who, following the disruption in 1843, became the Moderator of the First Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland.
In 1990, the parish merged with the Braid Church, becoming Morningside Braid, using the Braid Church building.
The building is now part of Napier University.
