From Dunlop - "The foundation stone of the church was laid by the Lord High Commissioner 1st June 1878, and a mission hall erected for services in Nov 1878. The name St Leonards came from an ancient hospital and chapel in the area. The church was opened in April 1879, but was destroyed by fire on the morning of 21st Nov 1879. A new church in early Gothic style was erected and opened 21st May 1880"
This church has had a varied history - It was built as a Church of Scotland parish church in 1880 and remained so until 1929 when the union took place between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church. This union resulted in an abundance of churches and many were surplus to requirement and closed. St Leonard's was one of those that closed and in 1932 it was taken over by a denomination called the Churches of Christ. In 1981 this denomination became part of the United Reformed Church and the building became known as Dalkeith Road United Reformed Church. . In 1990 it closed and became St. Margaret's and St Leonard's Catholic Church. The church changed addresses a couple of times. It was originally the last building in St Leonard's Street and then at sometime became the first building in Dalkeith Road. In 1991 it changed again from 1A Dalkeith Road to 110 St Leonard's Street. (With thanks to John Blyth)
In 1932, the congregation joined with Newington Church, in Clerk Street, this united congregation was subsequently dissolved in 1976, with the Clerk Street church becoming the "Queens Hall".
