The church itself was built in 1818, however, the congregation previously met in Charlotte Chapel nearby on Rose Street.
Records from both St Johns (1814 - 1988), and their former mission church, St Kentigerns (1871 - 1941), are available from the National Registers of Scotland.
A PhD thesis, "The Episcopal Congregation of Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, 1794-1818" by Eleanor Harris, is available from Stirling University.
