The foundation stone of St Matthews was laid in 1889, with the inaugural service held on 4th May 1890.
Prior to the construction of this church, an Iron Kirk was in use, at what is now 2 Cluny Avenue, just a few hundred metres from the current church.
In 1960, Morningside High (now the Churchill Theatre) closed, and the congregation joind Morningside Parish. In 1974, South Morningside also joined the parish, which became known as Cluny Parish Church. Subsequently, in 2003, Morningside Braid joined with Cluny, with the united parish once again taking the name Morningside Parish.
The parish website provides a history of the churches making up the current Morningside Parish.
