Index to James Wilson's Register of Deaths

These pages contain an index of the people recorded in an unofficial register of deaths between the years 1825 and 1862. The record was kept by James Wilson, a Hawick solicitor, and only ceased when he died, indeed the last entry is that of his own death, recorded by another hand. In total 408 deaths were recorded, only a fraction of those in the Hawick area at this time. Other sources of deaths during this period are monumental inscriptions, parish burial records and, from 1855 anyway, death certificates held at the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.

This index was compiled using the transcriptions of the register published in the 1915 transactions of the Hawick Archaeological Society which includes further biographical notes about some of the individuals (those marked with a * below).
