10.—COUNTY OF ABERDEEN.

I.—COUNTY BOUNDARIES.

The county of Aberdeen had one detached part (a detached part  of the parish of King Edward) wholly surrounded by the county of  Banff. The county of Aberdeen contained four detached parts of the  county of Banff, viz., the parish of St. Fergus, and parts of the parishes of Gartly, New Machar, and Old Deer. Six other parishes  were situated partly in the county of Aberdeen and partly in other  counties, viz., Banchory-Devenick, Banchory-Ternan, Cabrach, Cairnie,  Drumoak, and Glass. Four Banffshire parishes also (Gamrie, Inverkeithny, Alvah, and Rothiemay) were wholly or partly treated for  certain purposes as parts of Aberdeenshire. (See also Final Appendix,  City of Aberdeen and Peterculter.)

The county boundaries of Aberdeenshire have been dealt with as follows :—

A. With the County of Banff.

1.—Gambie, Inverkeithny, Alvah, and Rothiemay.

2.—Cabrach.

The parish of Cabrach was situated partly in the county of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Banff. It has been placed wholly in the county of Banff by the Order printed at p. 23.

3.—Cairnie.

The parish of Cairnie was situated partly in the county of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Banff. The county boundary bhas been left unaltered, but the Banffshire part of the parish has been  transferred to the Banffshire parish of Keith by the Order printed at p. 28.

4.—Gartly.

The eastern part of the parish of Gartly (east of the River Bogie) formed a detached part of county of Banff, wholly surrounded by the county of Aberdeen, the rest  of the parish of Gartly being in Aberdeenshire. By the Order printed at p. 24 this detached part has  been transferred to the county of Aberdeen, and accordingly the  whole parish of Gartly is now situated in the county of Aberdeen.

5.—Glass.

The parish of Glass was situated partly in the county of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Banff. By the Order printed at p. 23 the parish was placed wholly in Aberdeenshire. -

6.—King Edward.

The parish of King Edward had a detached part which formed  also a detached part of the county of Aberdeen, wholly surrounded by  the county of Banff. By the Order printed at p. 27 it has been  transferred from the county of Aberdeen to the county of Banff, and  at the same time from the parish of King Edward to the parish of  Alvah.

7.—New Machar.

The parish of New Machar had a detached part which formed also a detached part of the county of Banff. The main portion of the parish was in the county of Aberdeen, and the detached part, while  forming part of the county of Banff, was surrounded by the county of  Aberdeen. By the Order printed at p. 25 this detached part was  transferred to the county of Aberdeen, and at the same time it was joined to the main portion of the parish of New Machar by annexing the small intervening portion of the p arish of Udny.

8.—Old Deer

The parish of Old Deer had no detached part, but a portion of it  formed a detached part of the county of Banff, The rest of the parish  was in the county of Aberdeen, and this detached part of Banffshire was wholly surrounded by the county of Aberdeen. By the Order  printed at p. 25 the detached part of Banffshire has been transferred  to the county of Aberdeen, and thus the whole parish of Old Deer is  now in Aberdeenshire.

9.—St. Fergus.

The whole parish of St Fergus formed a detached  part of the county of Banff, the adjoining parishes being all situated in Aberdeenshire.

By the Order printed at p. 26 the parish has been transferred  to the county of Aberdeen, no change being made on the parish  boundaries.

B. With the County of Kincardine.

1.—Banchory-Devenick.

This parish was situated partly in the county of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Kincardine. By the Order printed at p. 29  no change was made in the county boundary, but the Aberdeenshire part of the parish was transferred to the Aberdeenshire parish of  Peterculter. Thus the parish of Banchory-Devenick now consists simply of the Kincardineshire part of the old parish.

2.—Banchory-Ternan.

The parish of Banchory-Ternan, which was situated partly in the  county of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Kincardine, has now been placed wholly in the county of Kincardine by the Order printed  at p. 29.

3.—Drumoak.

The parish of Drumoak was situated partly in the county of  Aberdeen and partly in the county of Kincardine. II.—PARISH BOUNDARIES.

1.—Aberdour, Fraserburgh, and Strichen.

The parish of Aberdour had a detached part which was situated on  the north border of the parish of Strichen. On the east of this detached part lay a detached part of the parish of Fraserburgh, which also  adjoined the parish of Strichen. By the Orders printed at p. 31 and p. 33 these two detached parts were transferred to the parish of Strichen.

3.—Banchory-Devenick and Peterculter.

The parish of Banchory-Devenick was situated partly in the county  of Aberdeen and partly in the county of Kincardine. It had a  detached part situated in and forming part of the county of Aberdeens surrounded by the parish of Peterculter. There were also two districts in Aberdeenshire common to the parishes of Banchory-Devenick and Peterculter. These are all dealt with in the Order  printed at p. 29, by which the whole of the Aberdeenshire part of the  parish was transferred to the parish of Peterculter, the county boundary being left unaltered.

It is hardly possible to enumerate all the properties transferred, though the names in the majority of cases can be given. It may be sufficient guide to remember that every subject which prior to 15th  May 1891 was at the same time in the county of Aberdeen and in the  parish of Banchory-Devenick is now in the parish of Peterculter,  while remaining in the county of Aberdeen. Or, it may be otherwise  put thus, so much of the old parish of Banchory-Devenick as lay north  of the River Dee has become part of the parish of Peterculter.

4.—Cairnie.

The parish of Cairnie has been altered in area through the transference of the part formerly in Banffshire to the Banffshire parish of  Keith by the Order printed at p. 28. The parish of Cairnie now  exists solely of that part of the old parish of Cairnie which was  situated in the county of Aberdeen.

5.—Cluny and Midmar.

The parish of Cluny had a detached part separated from tho  remainder of the parish by an intervening portion of the parish of  Midmar. By the Order printed at p. 32 an exchange of territory was  effected between these parishes, with the result of connecting the  detached part of Cluny with the main portion of the parish, and of  transferring to Midmar an intrusive peninsula of the parish of Cluny.  In order to equalise the exchange, Cluny received an additional portion  of Midmar, taken from the north-east corner of the latter parish.

The new boundaries are fully described in the Order, but the  following explanations may be of assistance :—(a.) the Douglas Burn referred to in Clause I. is the burn which leaves the detached part of  Cluny at a point east of Ordhill and reaches the main portion of Cluny  at Burnside ; (b.) the road from Aberdeen to Alford leaves the parish  of Echt at a point immediately north east of KInnernie and enters the parish of Cluny north of Linton House.

6.—Ellon and Methlick.

The parish of Methlick had a detached part which was bounded  on the west by the parish of Tarves, and elsewhere by the parish of  Ellon. By the Order printed at p. 34 this detached part was transferred to the parish of Ellon.

7.—King Edward.

The parish of King Edward had a detached part which was at the same time a detached part of the county of Aberdeen, surrounded by  the county of Banff. It has been transferred by the Order printed at p. 37 to the Banffshire parish of Alvah.

8.—New Machar and Udny.

The parish of New Machar had a detached part separated from  the main portion of the parish by a small intervening part of the parish of Udny. This detached part of New Machar was also a  detached part of the county of Banff. By the Order printed at p. 36  it has been transferred to the county of Aberdeen, and it has also  been connected with the main portion of the parish of New Machar  by annexing to that parish the intervening portion of the parish of  Udny, consisting of that part of the estate of Torryleith which was in  Udny.

9.—Logie-Coldstone, Strathdon, Tarland & Migvie, and Towie.

These four parishes form a group, and can best be dealt with together. The parish of Strathdon had a detached part in Glenkindie, bouned on the east by the parish of Towie and on the west by the  parish of Glenbucket. This detached part was so situated as to  separate a part of the parish of Towie at Glencuie from the rest of  that parish. In the case of these two detached parts these defects have  been cured by the Order printed at p. 34, which has transferred the  detached part of Strathdon to Towie, thus uniting the delimited part  of Towie with the main portion of that parish. The parish of Tarland & Migvie had three detached parts. Tarland & Migvie detached  No. 1 was situated at Deskry, and had the parish of Strathdon on the  west and the parish of Towie on the east. Tarland & Migvie detached  No. 2, situated at Migvie, was bounded on the north by the parish of Towie and elsewhere by the parish of Logie-Coldstone. Tarland & Migvie detached No. 3 was almost entirely surrounded by the parish  of Strathdon. By the Order printed at p. 35, Tarland & Migvie  detached No. 3 was transferred to Strathdon ; Tarland & Migvie  detached No. 1 was divided between Strathdon and Towie, Strathdon  receiving the part situated on the left bank of the Deaskry, and Towie  receiving the remainder ; and Tarland & Migvie detached No. 2 was  transferred to the parish of Logie-Coldstone. The north-east corner  of Logie-Coldstone was transferred to Tarland & Migvie, the new boundary being the road described in Clause IV. of the Order.

By Supplementary Order signed on 6th July 1891 Edinburgh  Gazette, 7th July 1891, p. 694) the Commissioners directed that the parish of Tarland & Migvie as altered in area should henceforth be known as the parish of Tarland.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

1. The counties are arranged in the order as in the Census returns, "such that a zig-zag line beginning at the north of Scotland and carried to the south passes successively through every County". The counties have the same numbers as in the Census returns.

2. The subjects transferred are enumerated under the head of the County or Parish to which they are transferred. Thus when an area has been transferred from County A to County B, the subjects affected are enumerated under County B, and a cross reference is given under County A.

3. The names of subjects are those contained in the Valuation Rolls. In the description of subjects the term "farm" includes the farm-house and servants' houses, and the term "croft" includes the house. But where any of the servants' houses on the farm have distinctive names, such houses are detailed separately. "House" includes "cottage", and "land" includes gardens, yards &c.

4. The names of proprietors are in almost all cases those given in The Valuation Rolls of 1890-91. It is therefore to be borne in mind that those who are described as proprietors may be limited owners only, such as liferenters or leaseholders.

5. Where villages or towns are affected, the names of the subjects and proprietors are not usually given. The description of the area transferred is in such cases quite sufficient to show whatever and to what extent any subject in the village or town has been affected by the Order.

6. The Ordnance Survey maps referred to are those published by the Ordnance Survey Department on the scale of one inch to the mile. Those published down to this date (1891), show the Counties and Parishes as they were before the Order of the Commissioners came into operation. It is expected that, when the work of the Commissioners is completed, revised maps will be issued to show the altered boundaries, but the sheets of the revised maps will bear the same numbers as the present maps. The Orders and the explanations can be followed readily on the maps as published at present.

7. An ampersand (&) has been used wherever a County or a Parish has a double name, e.g. "Ross & Cromarty" or "Fetlar & North Yell".

8. In most cases it is necessary to read the text of the order along with the explanation, because the full descriptions contained in the Orders are, as a rule, not repeated in the explanation.
