"CRICCIETH, (or Crickeith, or Cricaeth), a parish and municipal borough in the hundred of Evionydd, in the county of Carnarvon, 2 miles W. of Tref-llys. It is situated to the N. of Cardigan Bay, but has no harbour. It is a contributory borough to Carnarvon, in returning one member to parliament, and is governed by a mayor and two bailiffs. It was formerly a market town, but is now much decayed, containing only 180 houses, chiefly inhabited by fishermen. The imports are chiefly for domestic use. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Bangor, value with the curacies of Tref-llys and Ynyscynhaiarn, £324, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is in the later English style. The charities amount to £8 per annum. There are four chapels for Dissenters. On the isthmus are remains of a castle built in the reign of Edward I., which commands a fine view across the sands. Fairs are held on the 23rd May, 29th June, and 22nd October." [From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) - Transcribed by Colin Hinson ©2003]

Biography

This diary is one of a series kept by David Lloyd George while he was working as a solicitor in Criccieth. It is, perhaps, the most fascinating, as it was written just as Lloyd George was on the brink of launching into a political career.  - on the People's Collection Wales site
