The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Llanfihangel Geneur Glynn contained the following places:

"LLANFIHANGEL GENEU'R GLYNN, (or Llanfihangel-castell-gwalter), a parish in the hundred of Geneur-Glynn, county Cardigan, 4 miles N.E. of Aberystwith, its post town, and 10 from Machynlleth. It is a station on the Newtown and Machynlleth and Aberystwith and Welsh Coast railway. It is situated on the coast of Cardigan Bay, S. of the river Dovey. The Roman way Sarn Helen passes through' it. The parish includes the townships of Caelan-y-Maesmor, Cyfoethy-Brenin, and five others. A castle was built here by Walter Longsword in the 12th century, of which there are still some remains. Lead is obtained in the hills. The village is very considerable, and some of the inhabitants are engaged in the flannel manufacture. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of St. David's, value £221, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is built in the form of a cross, and is dedicated to St. Michael. There is a Calvinistic Methodist chapel in the village; also a school with an endowment producing £5 per annum. Here is a cromlech popularly known as Gwely Taliesin, i.e. "Taliesin's bed," and several Druidical remains. Gogerthan is the principal residence.

"BORTH, a village in the township of Cyfoeth-y-Brenin, and parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r Glynn, hundred of Geneur Glynn, in the county of Cardigan, South Wales, 5 miles to the N. of Aberystwith. Borth Sands extend northward from this village, which stands on the coast of Cardigan Bay, to the mouth of the river Dovey, a distance of 3 miles."

"BOW STREET, a hamlet in the township of Tyr-y-Mynach, and parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r-Glynn, hundred of Geneur-Glynn, in the county of Cardigan, South Wales, 2 miles to the N. of Aberystwith. It is on the coast of Cardigan Bay."

"CEULAN-Y-MAES-MAWR, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, hundred of Geneur-Glynn, in the county of Cardigan, 5 miles E. of Aberystwith. It is situated on the Ceulan river."

"CYFOETH-Y-BRENIN, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, hundred of Geneur-Glynn, in the county of Cardigan, 4½ miles N. of Aberystwith, its post town, and 4 from Eskynald. It contains the village of Borth. There are copper and lead mines. The sands on the coast stretch for nearly 3 miles to the mouth of the river Dovey."

"CYNNILL MAWR, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, hundred of Geneur-Glynn, in the county of Cardigan, 5½ miles N.E. of Aberystwith, its post town, and 2 from Llanfihangel. It is situated on the river Leri. In the village is a school for both sexes, endowed with £5 per annum."

"EGLWYS-FACH, a village in the township of Scybory-Coed and parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r-glynn, county Cardigan, 5 miles S.W. of Machynlleth It is situated in the vicinity of the river Dovey. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of St. David's, value £74."

"HENLLYS, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, county Cardigan, 4 miles N.E. of Aberystwith. The village is considerable. There are besides several seats and small places of this name in other parts of Wales, one near Beaumaris, in Anglesey, another near Llandovery, in Carmarthenshire, and a third near Newport, in Pembrokeshire."

"PENGARN, a village in the township of Tyr-y-Mynach and parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r-Glynn, county Cardigan, 3 miles N.E. of Aberystwith."

"PENRHYLOG, a hamlet in the township of Ceulan-y-Maes-Mawr, parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, county Cardigan, 5 miles N.E. of Aberystwith. It is situated on a branch of the river Lery."

"RHYDYPENNAN, a village in the township of Tyr-y-Mynach, parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r-Glynn, county Cardigan, 4 miles N. of Aberystwith."

"SCYBOR-Y-COED, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel Geneu'r Glynn, county Cardigan, 4 miles N. of Aberystwith. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Einon and Dovey, and includes Eglwys-Fach."

"TYR-Y-MYNACH, a township in the parish of Llanfihangel-Geneu'r-Glynn, hundred of Geneur-Glynn, county Cardigan, 4 miles N.W. of Aberystwith. It includes Bow Street, Pengarn, and Rhydpennan."
