Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers
From an article by Keith Tucker
" .............the Government sought to revive the Volunteer Movement that had existed earlier in the century. The Lord Lieutenant of each county, C.R.M.Talbot of Margam in the case of Glamorgan, was instructed to make an appeal for the formation of volunteer rifle corps for coastal defence. As such local landed gentry and those of wealth involved with civic duty were approached. In the Neath area the Glamorgan Volunteer Corps were inaugurated on 2nd June 1860. Evan Evans was commissioned as Captain with his son-in-law David Bevan as Lieutenant. The corps of 100 men consisted mainly of workers from his brewery. Although not paid for their services, a volunteer was respected by the community and would doubtless be looked upon favourably by his employer. Armaments were supplied by Government, the cost of uniforms and operating this small 'army' of men being financed by Evan Evans. The troops would be regularly exercised on manoeuvres at Crymlyn Burrows and it is likely that the fives court was pressed into service as a rifle range for target practice. An engraving in the London Illustrated News shows a review of the troops at the brewery in Cadoxton. The company presented their Captain with an illuminated address, a shako, cross belts and a sword of Damascus steel in a silver scabbard engraved with embossed hilt and guard......................."

Vale of Neath Brewery - Cash Book - September 1874
From Archives Network Wales;
"The Vale of Neath Brewery was established in the 1830s in Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, Glamorgan. Initially the business was successful, but economic difficulties and a fire in 1843 led to the sale of the business in 1850 to Evan Evans (1791-1871). Evans was a maltster, brewer and beer merchant, who also owned a schooner which traded between Neath and Bristol. Later he became a substantial colliery owner and was mayor of Neath. The brewery was producing 1,000 barrels a week by 1860 and soon acquired a good reputation. The brewery remained in the Evans and Evans Bevan family until 1967 when it was acquired by Messrs Whitbread Wales Ltd from Sir David Evans Bevan. The brewery eventually closed in 1972"

Declaration by William Aubrey Leyson
This document contains the names of the various people mentioned in a property transaction in 1919; it's purpose is to rectify/clarify the use of a wrong name in the latter
Declaration dated 6 April 1940
I WILLIAM AUBREY LEYSON of 2 Church Place Neath in the County of Glamorgan a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature DO SOLEMNLY AND SINCERELY DECLARE as follows :-1. In the month of December one thousand nine hundred and nineteen I was instructed by DAVID LEWIS (whom I had always known as Llewellyn Lewis) of 3 Penscynor Cilfrew near Neath aforesaid to act professionally for him in relation to the purchase by him of the freehold reversion of a dwelling house and premises situate and then known as "Ivy House" Cilfrew Road Aberdulais near Neath aforesaid but now known as 3 Penscynor Cilfrew near Neath aforesaid.
2. The Leashold interest in the said premises had been acquired by one Llewellyn Lewis ( the father of the said David Lewis) by a Lease dated the thirteenth day of May one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine and made between Henry Tennant and Thomas Boone Everest Tennant of the one part and the SAID LLEWELLYN LEWIS OF THE OTHER PART.
3. When I Acted for the said David Lewis as aforesaid I thought his name was Llewellyn Lewis as I had always known him by that name and the Conveyance of the Freehold Reversion of the said dwelling house and premises bearing date the Thirty First day of December one thousand nine hundred and nineteen and made between Charles Coombe Tennant of the first part Percy Jennings and Frederick William Fane of the second part and Llewellyn Lewis of the third part was therefore drawn in the name of Llewellyn Lewis as the Purchaser and when the said David Lewis executed the said Conveyance in my presence I directed him to sign Llewellyn Lewis his name Llewellyn Lewis in the document which he did as it now appears thereon and I attested the signature accordingly. Had the said David Lewis informed me that his correct name was David Lewis the error in the document would have been rectified when the said transaction was completed by me.
4. THE said Llewellyn Lewis died on the tenth of June One Thousand nine hundred and four.
5. THE said David Lewis died on the twenty sixth of January One thousand nine hundred and forty and after his death the said error in the said Document was discovered.
6. I am quite satisfied that the said Freehold Reversion was purchased by the said David Lewis as I advised him to purchase the same and he provided the purchase money and that the said conveyance should have been drawn in his name and executed by him accordingly as he the said David Lewis was the person for whom I acted as aforesaid.
7. I can also testify of my own knowledge that the said David Lewis resided in the said Dwellinghouse and premises for many years before he purchased the said Freehold Reversion thereof and that he afterwards continued in possession of and resided in the said Dwellinghouse and premises and was still in occupation and possession thereof at the time of his death as aforesaid.
AND I make this solemn Declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the provisions of the Statutory Declarations Act One thousand eight hundred and thrity five.
DECLARED at Neath in the County of Glamorgan this sixth day of April One thousand nine hundred and forty.
