"AN AMMAN VALLEY APPEAL FOR MEN. We have been asked to give publicity to the following appeal:—

Sir,—Would you allow me, through your colums, to make an earnest appeal to all able-bodied men of the Cwmgors, G.C.G., and Lower Brynamman district to enrol as members of the recently formed Volunteer Territorial Reserve. By joining, men do not pledge themselves for foreign, nor necessarily, for home service. No oath is taken. What they do is this. They signify their willingness to take their small share in the defence of the country in case of extreme necessity. This necessity, we all hope, will never arise, but at the same time it must be provided for. It is with the object of making men more efficient in the performance of that duty that this Volunteer Reserve has been formed. Already 63 men have enrolled, some of them married with families to support. Drills are held three times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7. So far they have been held at Cwmgors, but if members desire, a more convenient centre could no doubt be found. There are competent experienced men to teach the drill, which in itself is immensely interesting recreation. It is hoped at once to start rifle practice. Come then and join us and show that you approve of the action of the Government in saying nay to a nation armed to the teeth that would inflict the horrors of war upon a small defenceless people, and,which if the fortunes of war go with it, is sure to saddle its cast-iron military spirit-with the enormous expenditure that that entails—upon the rest of Europe.—I am, yours faithfully, D. "Mabon's Day.—It was resolved to ask the management of the Gilwen Colliery, Cwm-twrch, and the Cwmgors Colliery, Gwauncaegurwen, to meet a deputation with a view to consider the matter in dispute relative to the observance of Mabon's Day, with a view to trying to effect a settlement. In this district, Mabon's Day was observed until the new agreement came into force, but now the management object to the practice, and the men are idle."

"On Monday evening a reception and presentation concert was held at Tabernacle, Cwmgors, the Rev. T. M. Roderick presiding. The hero was Gunner William Jones, who has just returned from France. On behalf of the local Soldiers and Sailors' Fund, Gunner Jones was presented with a cheque by the Rev. T. M. Roderick and on behalf of the Ladies' Guild Mrs. Johnny James handed him a sum of money. Gunner Jones, who was heartily cheered, briefly responded. The following contributed to the programme: Mr. John O. Rees, Miss Morfydd Davies, Dinah Hicks, Irene Austin, Rosie Phillips, Lizzie M. CWMGORSE. On Sunday afternoon an organ recital was held at Llanfair Church, Cwmgorse- The occasion was the opening or a new double manual pipe-organ, which has been erected in the church bv Messrs. Peter and Conacker, Huddersfield. The building was crowded, and all the artistes acquitted themselves in the best possible manner. The organ was excellently manipulated by the clever organist, Mr. T. D. Jones, organist of St. Paul's Churh. Sketty. Mr Jones was supported by the following artistes: Soprano. Miss Selina Orum. Swansea; tenor, Mr. Geo. Parkes, Swansea; bass, Mr. Rees Williams, Swansea. Great credit for the organisation of this fine musical treat is due to the hon. secre- tary, Mr. David P. Rees.

CWMGORSE A THIRSTY poet, whilst travelling through Cwmgorse last week, called at Abernant, and before leaving wrote the following stanza, and left it on the table, with compliments:—

Am lymaid pob cwm lamant
Heibio'r nef i Abernant. "

NEW CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL.—The foundation stones of a new Congregational Chapel were laid at Cwmgorse, Gwaun-cae-gurwen, on Thursday week. The need for a new Welsh chapel had been greatly felt for some years past in this growing and populous district, and the building of a fine edifice which, when completed, will be capable of seating 650 persons, has now provided this need. The building is being erected of local stone, with blue pennant stone facing and Grinshill stone dressings. A feature of the building will be a gallery carried on cantilevers, which will do away with columns altogether. The whole of the interior is being fitted in oak. and the ceiling richly decorated with plaster enrichments. The chapel is being built adjoining the present schoolroom, and in addition to the building a minister's and other rooms have been provided, and the whole will, when completed, appear a very substantial and up-to-date block of buildings. The cost will be about £ 3,400; and the work is being carried out by Mr. J. L. Hancock, builder, Cardiff, from plans drawn by Mr. W. Beddoe Rees, architect, Cardiff. The stone-laying ceremony was performed at. 2.30 o'clock by Mr. Benjamin Evans, Cwmgorse; Mrs. Ann Morgan, Cwmgorse; Mr. Samuel Jenkins, J.P., and Mr. Benjamin Rees, London. The Rev. B. D. Davies, Carmel, G.C.G., presided., and amongst others present were the Revs. W. D. Thomas and H O Jones, Brynamman; J. Edryd Jones, Garnant; Price, Rhydyfro, and Seiriol Williams, Pontardawe. Mr. J. D. Morgan (treasurer of the Anthracite District) and Mr. John Griffiths (secretary of Tabernacle Chapel) gave the history of the latter chapel. In the evening, at 6.30, sermons were preached by the Revs. J. Edryd Jones, Garnant, and J. Hywel Parry, Llansamlet. Collections were made towards the Building Fund.

CWMGORSE EISTEDDFOD. At the Cwmgorse annual eisteddfod Councillor T. D. Jones, Glangarnant, presided, and Mr. John Williams, M.P., conducted. The adjudicators were:—Music, Messrs. T. Glyndwr Richards, Mountain Ash, and G.T.Jenkins, Pontardawe; and literary, the Rev. W. Alfa Richards, Birchgrove. Messrs. D. J. Evens (Ap Tanyrallt) and D. W. Thomas, Cwmgorse, accompanied. The secretarial duties were ably performed by Councillor J. J. James and Mr. T. R. Jones. ....(part extract).....

CWMGORSE COLLIER DIES AFTER ACCIDENT AT HIS WORK Evan Andrew Davies (23), a collier at Cwmgorse Colliery (near Brynaanman), and who resides at Water-street, Gwaun-cae- Gurwen, died at his home on Tuesday morning.  He met with an accident at his work on Monday night, a stone falling from the roof ot his stall. Dr. LI. James was called in  shortly after the accident, and attended deceased until his death.

CWMGORSE COLLIERY CLOSING. The Brook Drift Colliery, Cwmgorse, is to be closed for good. This will, unfortunately. throw scores of workmen out of employment but it is hoped that the authorities will see to  it that the workmen will get immediate employment at  their other collieries.

CWMGORSE FATALITY. Young Collier Buried by Fall of Coal. Mr. Wilson, Deputy County Coroner for Swansea, held an inquiry on Friday at the Police Station, Gwauncaegurwen, touching  the death of Morgan Jones, Gate-street, who met with a fatal accident last Tuesday at the New Cwmgorse Colliery. Mr. David Jones, Gron-road, said he was working with his son, deceased, and a lad, Lewis Thomas, on Tuesday last. About one p.m. he bored a hole about; five feet long in the barrier of coal that lay between him and his son and de- ceased. Witness said he sent the lad Thomas to warn those on the other side that he was going to charge the hole, and again gave the necessary warning knocks, which were answered before he attached the igniter. He then shouted "Fire," and retired to a place of safety ......(part extract)......
