PONTYPRIDD, late Newbridge, is a thriving market town in the hundred of Miskin, county of Glamorgan unio and county court district of its own name, and Bristol district court of bankruptcy, situated in the parishes of Eglwysilan, Llantwit Vardre and Llanwonno, and on the river taff at its junction with the Rhondda. It is distant 182 miles from London (via Cardiff), 12 N. N.W. from Cardiff, 13 S. from Merthyr Tydfil,12 from Aberdare, 7 from Caerphilly, and 5 from Llantrisant, situated in the midst of a district richin mineral wealth, and on the Taff Vale line, which here joins the Rhondda branch of the Taff Vale Railway, and on the Glamorganshire canal, which render facilities for the conveyance of its productions to the chief ports of the Bristol Channel. With these advantages, no wonder that Pontypridd is rapidly becoming the centre of considerable commercial enterprise, and from the various iron and other works in its vicinity it may now be classed amongst the rising towns in South Wales. The celebrated Pont-y-Pridd (from which the town now takes its name), is a bridge here which bestrides the Taff river, and is an object of great curiosity; it was erected at the expense of the county by a Mr. William Edwards, aself-taught mason, who, having failed twice in his project, still preserved, and at length succeeded in completed the present admirable structure. The bridge is a perfect segment of a circle, the chord of which is 140 feet, and about 35 feet above the level of the river. Three circular tunnels pierce each abutment, and to this curious device it appears he owed its ultimate success, as they take away from the weight of that part of the bridge, and so prevent the light crown from being sprung by it, which had been the case in his previous attempts. It was, however, found more ornamental than useful, as from it great steepness it was with considerable difficulty any vehicle could be got over it; consequently, a new bridge was erected by public subscription in 1857 near the old one; the latter has stood for more than a century an object of wonder and admiration, and a striking memorial of the ingenuity and perseverance of its builder. Another matter of interest in connection with the bridge is an extraordinary echo which multiplies the sound several time. The far famed Logan, or Rocking Stone, another object of attraction to visitors, is situated on an eminence near the town, and is surrounded by the remains of what is said to have beena Druidical temple. In the vicinity is the Ffynon-Gelly-dawel, or "Eye Well," which possesses medicinal properties. The Pontypridd court house is situated near the railway station, and is a handsome building of recent erection. The county court, petty sessions for the lower division of the hundred, and general business of the town are held in it. Petty sessions for the upper division of the hundred are held at the New Inn Assembly Rooms. Opposite the court house is the workhouse for the union of Pontypridd. It is a fine spacious structure, with free stone facings, and cost upwards of #8,500. Mr. G. E. Robinson, of Cardiff, was the architect, and Messrs. Jones and Sons were the contractors for the building. St. Catherine's Church, acuracy under Glyn-Taff, erected in 1867-8, is a handsome edifice in the early decorated style of architecture, and cost over #5,000. It stands on the western side of the town, has a south aisle (and is soon to have a north aisle), chancel, vestry, with organ chamber, tower, and spire, the height of the latter being 162 feet. The altar cloth was designed, worked, and presented by Miss Clara Thomas. The site was given by the Thomas family, of Ystrad Mynach and Llwynmadoc, who were also large contributors to the building fund. John Norton, Esq., London, was the architect, and Mr. William Morgan, Pontypridd, the builder. There are chapels for Baptists, Christian Brethran, Independents, Calvinistic and Wesleyan Methodists; also excellently conducted Board, National, and other schools. The Pontypridd Literary Institute was started in 1860. The erection of a public hall for the purposes of the institute and for public meetings, &c. is contemplated by the members. The new premises built for the West of England and South Wales District Bank, but now occupied by the London and Provincial Banking Company, are situated in Taff street. The National Bank of Wales, Limited, are about to re-build and occupy premises situated in Market street. The works in the neighbourhood are the Newbridge Iron Works, the Treforest Tin-plate Works, and the Treforest Iron and Steel Works, the chemical works of Chivers, Todd & Chivers, and the Rhondda Acid Works, three foundries, a firebrick works, steam saw mills, two tan yards, oil works, and five breweries, &c. There are several quarries of excellent stone in the vicinity. The market is held on Wednesday, and is well attended. Faris are held on February 14th, April 3rd, June 14th, and October 14th. Population returned in the parishes.

LLANVABON, or Llanfabon, is an extensive parish in the Pontypridd union and county court district. It is divided into the hamlets of Glyn Rhymney and Garth. The parish church dedicated to St. Mabon, is a neat modern structure; the living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff. There are also two district churches, situated at Saint Cynon, near Navigation, and Eglwys-y-Drindod, at Ystrad Mynach. The chapels for dissenters embrace every denomination, also a Nationa school at Nelson, and one at Graig Berthllwyd, and an endowed school at Ystrad. At Navigation, about 3.5 miles from Pontypridd, in this parish, are situated the head offices of the Glamorganshire Canal Company. Population of the parish in 1861, 2,360, and in 1871, 2,263.

NELSON is a considerable village in Llanvabon parish, about 6 miles from Pontypridd, 9 from Merthyr, and 7 from Caerphilly. The Llanciach station on the Great Westerm railway (West Midland Section) is in the vicinity. Quaker's Yard (socalled from being formerly a burial place for the Society of Friends) is also in this parish, about 5 miles from Pontypridd, and 9 from Merthyr. It is the junction of the Great Western and Taff Vale railways, which have a station here. Flannel is manufactured to a small extent at Quakers' Yard.

LLANTWIT VARDRE is a parish in the same union, county court district, &c. as Llanvabon. Part of Pontypridd, and the whole of Treforest, are situated in this parish. The living of the parish church is a perpetual curacy, in the patronage of the vicar of Llantrisant. There are several coal works in the parish. Population in 1861, 4, 415, and in 1871, 5,024

LLANWONNO is a very large parish in the union and county court district of Pontypridd. The parish church is an ancient structure, with nave, chancel, north and south aisles, porch and tower. It is in excellent repair, and is surrounded by oneof the finest churchyards in the Principality. The living is a perpetual curacy, with the curacy of St. David's, Rhondda Valley, annexed, in the patronage of the vicar of Llantrisant. St. David's is a district church, or a chapel of ease to the parish church. Mountain Ash is partly in this parish, but is given elsewhere. Population of the parish in 1861, 3,702, and in 1871, 11,434.

GLYN TAFF (which contains a district church), Gyfeillon, Nantgarw, Pont Shon Norton, and Upper Boat are small villages situated in the vale of Taff, Eglwysilan parish. There is a foundry at Upper Boat, and a stoneware and pipe works atNantgarw, also several collieries in the neighbourhood.

Britannia, Cymmer, Dinas, Eirw and Trebanog in the parish of Llantrisant, with Hafod, Hopkinstown, Gyfeillon, Porth, and Trehafod in the parish of Llanwonno, are villages distant from 2 to 5 miles from Pontypridd, situated in the Rhondda Valley (celebrated for its smokeless steam coal), and in the ecclesiastical district of St. David. The river Rhondda and the Rhondda branch of the line of railway (which has several stations) run through the valley; the former joining the river Taff, and the latter the Taff Vale railway section at Pontypridd, where it forms a junction. At Porth which is the most populous of the above named places, is the junction of the Rhondda Vach line, which penetrates the Rhondda Vach Valleyfor several miles, but which is used for minerals odly. Population of the above given with the respective parishes.
